The West Tamar Council and Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay Aluminium smelter are pleased to announce the recipients of their Recovery, Economic and Resilience Grant partnership, to assist businesses in the West Tamar Municipality with recovery from the impact of COVID-19.

Following an expression of interest, application and assessment process, five eligible businesses have been successful in securing grant funding of $10,000 each.

The $50,000 partnership is one of a number of major community investments the smelter has supported in Northern Tasmania as part of a US$25 million commitment Rio Tinto has made to support communities around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery, through its Partnership to Progress program.

Bell Bay Aluminium general manager Shona Markham said being resilient and adaptive in the current economic environment has never been more important for businesses.

“It’s our pleasure to be able to support the West Tamar municipality and the successful grant recipients through this partnership with Council.

The smelter has had the privilege of operating throughout this pandemic and, we want to be able to support those smaller local businesses in our region impacted by COVID-19.

I am delighted our funding will support five very diverse businesses operating in the West Tamar to expand capacity or production, embrace technology, support training initiatives and introduce new product ranges,” Shona said.

West Tamar Council Mayor, Christina Holmdahl is pleased to see such a great cross section of projects receiving funding.

“Five recipients will receive a total of $50,000 in grants across marine, food manufacturing, adventure tourism and education sectors, all within the West Tamar municipality.
