Don’t forget to bring in your bins within 24 hours

Council is reminding residents not to leave waste collection bins on the kerbside for longer than 24 hours after they have been emptied. 

General Manager Communities John McDougall said there is a local law in place to manage how long general waste and recycling bins are left on the kerb.  

‘Bins left kerbside make streets look untidy and can also create a hazard for pedestrians,’ he explained. 

‘From time-to-time we have to remind people to put their bins back inside their property within 24 hours of them being emptied.  

‘We’re running an awareness campaign about the law in the first instance as perhaps some people may have forgotten about the law or not realise it exists. 

‘There’s a grace period of three weeks before we begin issuing compliance notices from 1 October. If you receive a compliance notice and don’t put your bin away within 14 days, you may receive a fine. 

‘Issuing compliance notices and fines is always a last resort and we’re hoping people will remember to do the right thing and put their bins away.’
