A new boardwalk and viewing platforms that overlook the Werribee River, terraces for nature photography and a new walking path are on the cards for one of Werribee South’s most unique natural assets – the K Road Cliffs.

Wyndham City has awarded the detailed design contract for the implementation of the K Road Cliffs Masterplan, a $2.4 million project which aims to reduce further erosion and protect the unique cliff geology, while boosting tourism and visitor appeal by improving pedestrian access and walkability.

Highlights of the project include drainage works to manage the significant erosion at the K Road Cliffs; a new cliff top walking path, including a boardwalk with lookouts over the Werribee River; a staircase with terraces for seating and nature photography; new car parking; seating; and interpretive signage.

This project is being funded through Wyndham City’s 2020/21 capital works program ($900,000), and a $1.5 million Growing Suburbs Fund grant.

Urban Initiatives was the successful bidder for the detailed design contract.

Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said Council was also finalising options for riverbank access.

“The K Road Cliffs are one of Wyndham’s best kept secrets, and once these works are complete, we’re confident that the area will attract both locals and tourists alike,” Cr Marcus said.

“This project will include drainage works to redirect storm water run-off away from the fragile cliff edge to protect these cliffs and make the area safer for visitors.”

“It will also significantly improve the visitor experience by providing a beautiful new boardwalk with lookouts over the picturesque Werribee River, a new staircase with viewing platforms and terraces for people to sit down and take in the view, or for nature and bird lovers to indulge in nature photography.”

“This project is a key feature of the Wyndham Coastal and Marine Management Plan, a five-year plan designed to enhance the unique qualities of the Wyndham coastline for greater access and enjoyment and to facilitate appropriate coastal development and tourism.”

“We thank the State Government for their investment in this important project.”
