Ellenbrook residents are one step closer to having a state-of-the-art recreation and aquatic facility in their own backyard.
The City of Swan celebrated the start of construction on the new indoor facility in Ellenbrook on Tuesday September 15.
Mayor Kevin Bailey was joined by Attorney General and Federal Member for Pearce, the Hon. Christian Porter and Member for Swan Hills, Jessica Shaw MLA to break ground on the multimillion-dollar project.
The new facility will integrate aquatic, sport, health, wellbeing and community elements under one roof, cater to people and groups of all ages and abilities, and reduce the need to drive 30 minutes to the nearest indoor facility.
Mayor Bailey said this was an exciting project milestone for the City and Ellenbrook residents, who had been advocating for the multi-purpose facility for years.
“One of the City’s key priorities is to provide high-quality facilities and services to all our residents, and a multi-purpose leisure facility has been missing from the Ellenbrook area,” Mayor Bailey said.
“Not only will the new facility give current residents the opportunity to lead healthier lives, the project is a major investment in the future of Ellenbrook where the local area population is set to grow to 70,000 by 2036.”
The Federal Government contributed $25 million towards the project, which demonstrates their commitment to building community facilities and infrastructure in one of the nation’s fastest growing areas. The State Government also contributed $7 million for planning and construction works.
“We are grateful to the State and Federal governments for their on-going support, and we will continue to work with the State Government regarding their funding arrangements,” he said.
Earthworks have commenced and the expression of interest for construction is now open.
