Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) was recognised as one of the Region’s top achievers in training last week at the annual Queensland Training Awards for the Darling Downs South West district, taking out two major awards.
Council Administration Officer, Abby Kirby, took out the Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year Award after completing a Certificate III in Business in Council’s Property Services Branch.
Abby was also nominated as a regional finalist for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Award.
In addition to this, Toowoomba Regional Council was recognised for its dedication to training, winning the Region’s Large Employer of the Year.
Toowoomba Regional Council Finance and Business Strategy Portfolio Leader, Councillor Kerry Shine said the awards were a huge accomplishment for the organisation, which placed a lot of dedication and resources into training.
“It is wonderful to see our staff and organisation recognised with such reputable awards,” he said.
“Council is committed to providing our staff access to nationally-accredited training programs that assist them with their career progression.
“With about 1700 staff, it’s an honour to be recognised as an organisation that’s highly committed to our workforce and training.”
Abby said being able to complete her traineeship at Council helped her realise the profession she wanted and gave her the skills to start pursuing her career goals.
“My traineeship at Council helped me discover the work I love, “she said.
“In the future I would like to undertake tertiary studies in Business and Human Resource Management to further progress my career.”
Abby works full-time in Council’s Development Engineering Branch.
Abby and Council have been selected as state finalists for the two categories. The state Queensland Training Awards will be announced on 18 September 2020 via livestream.
