The Shire of Harvey residents’ Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bin had the lowest contamination rate of all South West Local Governments at 0.4 percent. This is a decrease since last year’s audit which had a 2.2 percent contamination rate.
A recent audit of 6 tonnes of waste was conducted by Bunbury Harvey Regional Council from the six local governments in the South West that have a FOGO bin.
Most of the contaminants were clearly not FOGO items, with the exception of cardboard packaging containing plastic, such as tissue boxes. The 0.4 percent of contaminants included:
General waste Textiles Recyclable beverage containers.We recently provided free compostable bags to residents, however if you are purchasing your own bags, please ensure they are certified compostable bags with the AS 4736 logo.
More facts General waste bins contained 3.2 percent of FOGO and this is a reduction from last year’s total of 7.6 per cent. In 2018, before the FOGO bin was introduced, bins contained 58 percent of food and garden organics material. Since the introduction of the FOGO bin almost 5,000 tonnes of waste has been diverted from landfill.Everyone is to be congratulated on their efforts, for embracing the introduction of the FOGO bin and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.
