The reactivation of Oval 4 for community winter football, cricket and women’s sport will begin on 4 November 2020.
This project, which was endorsed by Council in September 2018 and forms part of Bayside’s Sportsground Pavilion Improvement Plan, will include resurfacing the sportsground, improving drainage, installing lighting, and proposing to build a basic pavilion.
Sportsground works will commence on 4 November 2020 to maximise the summer growing season of the turf. This will enable the shortest possible closure time for Oval 4 and minimise disruption to users of the park.
Oval 4 will be temporarily fenced for up to 12 months for the sportsground and lighting works. Construction of the proposed pavilion is expected to commence in the second half of 2021 and be completed by the end of 2022.
A section of pathway between the northeast of Oval 4 and New Street may be closed during works, as required, for the safe movement of construction vehicles and heavy machinery. Pedestrians will be directed to alternate routes.
To preserve the open feel of the reserve, there will be no permanent fencing around Oval 4. Delineation of Oval 4 from surrounding recreational areas will be marked by a granitic sand perimeter path.
Council acknowledges this sportsground is a popular recreation area, especially during COVID-19 restrictions. The impacts and restrictions of the pandemic may last for an extended period and it is not possible to defer all projects until this is resolved or reduced. We are progressing with improvement projects to support the successful return of community sport after restrictions ease.
