Speeding up the transition to a low carbon future

The City of Fremantle is hosting a seminar next week to explore how Fremantle and Western Australia can transition more quickly to a low carbon economy.

The seminar, to be facilitated by Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt, will be held at the Fremantle Town Hall at 6pm on Tuesday 22 September.

Speakers will include Fremantle-based climate scientist Bill Hare, Chair of Environmental Engineering at Murdoch University Martin Anda, founder and Chief Executive of local tech company ClimateClever Vanessa Rauland and Olive Bennet and Nishtha Vashisth from the City of Fremantle’s Youth Network.

Mayor Pettitt said the seminar was inspired by the Youth Network’s call for more action to address climate change.

“A letter from the Fremantle Youth Network in May 2019 kicked off an important conversation about climate change, and led to Fremantle's elected members declaring a state of climate and biodiversity emergency,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“Climate change is an issue that affects us all, but the biggest impact will be felt by today’s youth and the generations that will follow them.

“It’s inspiring to see young people in Fremantle who are prepared to stand up and voice their concerns about an issue that is so critical to their future, so we’re excited to have Olive and Nish from the Fremantle Youth Network continue to contribute to this important discussion.”

The speakers will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session.
