Council is renewing the western footpath on Station Street, Wentworth Falls.
The existing claret ash trees will be replaced with 10 lipstick maple trees. The claret ash trees that have been there for about 25 years, have no further room for growth, and are damaging pavers and creating a hazard for pedestrians.
The new lipstick maples trees are an ideal street tree and a better long-term solution for the location, as they are more tolerant to various soil conditions and not likely to cause drainage issues or pavement damage.
The lipstick maples, that will quickly grow to the scale of the current trees at 8-10 metres, also display a more vibrant autumn colour. Like the claret ash, they are deciduous so they provide shade in summer, while letting winter sun through.
As part of the upgrade, Council is also taking the opportunity to replace the driveways in dark grey concrete to give a visual cue to drivers of pedestrian priority.
During the renewal, Council will take measures to ensure disruption to parking and pedestrians on Station Street is kept to a minimum. There will be pedestrian access to the shops with pedestrian bridges from the road to the shops, and to maintain access, driveways will be worked on separately.
However, there will be 10 car spaces temporarily out of action, along with the bus stop, while works are completed.
The estimated time for these works is ten weeks and is scheduled to start early February 2021, during term times, to avoid disruptions during busy holiday periods.
