What is wellbeing and why does it matter? What influence does wellbeing have on our lives, our children and our work? And is your wellbeing enabling you to reach your potential?

Our level of wellbeing impacts all areas of our lives, including our ability to learn and perform. The good news is that we can learn to manage and boost our own happiness.

In the lead-up to Mental Health Awareness Month in October, the Maroondah community is invited to a free online community event ‘From surviving to thriving’ on 5 October hosted by Maroondah City Council.

‘From surviving to thriving’ is about coping with life’s challenges, whether it is a worldwide event like COVID-19, a personal tragedy or trials we face every day.

Listen to Dr Lucy Hone, a director of the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing & Resilience, in the comfort of your own home as she draws on her personal and professional experience to share evidence-based resilience strategies.

Whether you are seeking inspiration and strategies to cope with lockdown or life in general, Dr Hone discusses what factors are critical for life satisfaction, different models of wellbeing, and will offer practical tips for boosting mental fitness.

According to Dr Hone, strategies for increasing wellbeing are numerous. Knowing our strengths, using a strengths-based approach to all areas of life, and learning to play to our strengths is one path to achieving higher levels of psychological wellbeing.

By sharing her own story of loss, and how her academic training in psychology helped her weather tough times, Dr Hone hopes participants can learn how they too can cultivate personal resilience.

Dr Lucy Hone is a director of the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing & Resilience, a research associate at AUT University, a published academic researcher, best-selling author and contributor to Psychology Today magazine.

Mental Health Awareness Month is part of a national mental health promotion campaign held in October each year, and incorporates World Mental Health Day, held globally on 10 October.

This event is being run in partnership with five other local councils (City of Kingston, Manningham Council, City of Monash, City of Whitehorse, Yarra Ranges Council), as well as local organisations EACH, Eastern Regional Libraries and NEAMI National.

The free online event will take place on Monday 5 October, 7pm to 8.30pm. Bookings are essential. A link will be sent to you on the day of the event to enable you to join the presentation.
