Burnie City Council has announced that it will not hold the annual Christmas Parade or the New Years Eve Bite n Brew in 2020 due to COVID-19 and associated restrictions.
Mayor Steve Kons said “that following careful consideration of all the issues, a decision had been made to ensure the safety of everyone in the community”.
“Council is disappointed it has had to make this decision but believes that it is in the best interests of all including Council staff, that we not proceed with either event. Both these events attract thousands and we realise how much joy they provide to the community.”
Mayor Kons said “that Council is now working on an alternative family event to provide some pre-Christmas entertainment and opportunity for the community to celebrate the festive season at the end of a trying year”.
“We are working to ensure that this family event can be conducted safely and within current government restrictions”.
“Please keep your eye on Facebook in the coming weeks as Council provides updates on the family event”.
“We will also provide updates on the processes that will be put in place in order to hold this in the safest way, whilst also allowing people to enjoy the event with their families.”
