Lithgow City Council has received funding from the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program to deliver enhancements to Pioneer Park and adjoining intersection.
The Streets as Shared Spaces program provides one-off funding to support Councils to develop quick response pilot projects that test ideas for streets as safe, shared spaces. Lithgow City Council will test recommendations from the NSW Government’s Road Safety Plan 2021 for safer vehicle movement by installing temporary kerb buildouts to narrow the carriageway at Main Street and Bridge Street and widen the pedestrian walkway across the bridge.
The grant will also deliver enhancements to Pioneer Park, enabling Council to further improve this public space, following the installation of a new toilet block and bus shelter. The removal of walls and damaged brick path surfaces will create an open green space, and temporary furniture, plantings and cultural activations will transform the site into a space for community reconnection.
“These interim works will deliver a vastly improved green space for Main Street. They will also create community feedback to inform the next stage of the CBD Revitalisation Plan,” Mayor Ray Thompson said. “These initiatives can stimulate local economic activity without impacting business operations in the process.”
