Lachlan Shire is rich in bird life and the 2020 Aussie Backyard Bird Count offers a great opportunity for members of the public to take part in a national bird survey.
Run by BirdLife Australia from 19 to 25 October 2020, the project is an all-ages activity which involves observing and counting the birds that live near you.
BirdLife Australia is asking you to look for birds in your garden, the local park, the fields or even your town centre. By telling them about the birds you’ve seen within a 20-minute period, you will help develop an understanding of local birds, whilst getting to know the wildlife on your doorstep.
You can count as many times as you like over the week and each count needs to be completed over a 20-minute period. The data collected will assist BirdLife Australia to understand more about the birds found where people live.
To complete the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, spend 20 minutes standing or sitting in one spot and noting down the birds that you see. You will need to count the number of each species you spot within the 20 minute period. For example, you might see four Australian magpies, two rosellas and a flock of galahs.
Once you have completed your count, you can submit it through the online web form at https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/submit-a-count/ or through the free Aussie Bird Count app. The app can be downloaded at Google Play or iTunes.
The Aussie Bird Count app also has a handy field-guide to help you identify birds.
