October is Mental Health Month and this year’s theme is tune in.
It’s a time to raise awareness, decrease stigma, and empower people to seek help. We want to encourage you all to take the time to tune in.
Tune in to the present. It’s about being aware of what’s happening within you, and in the world around you. Whether that’s getting active outside or appreciating stillness by closing your eyes and focussing on your breath. Find out how to get started with meditation with tips from local group Making Meditation Mainstream.
Tune in to your senses. Listen to what you can hear, smell and even taste. Tuning into your senses can help you focus your mind, find a new perspective, help you reflect and be present.
Tune in to the stigma. Mental Health Month is also a time to evaluate how attitudes and understandings of mental health and wellbeing impact our ability to live the lives we truly want. So - think about how your words and actions can affect people especially those experiencing poor mental health. Tune in to how you talk and reduce the stigma around mental health.
Tune in to your community. Find out what’s happening that you can be part of, or that you can help others be part of. For some people that means joining a sporting team, community group or volunteering. It’s great way to make sure either you or someone who needs support has a safe place they can talk about their experiences and reach out.
Tune in to your services. Remember if you’re feeling or experiencing anxiety, fear, distress and concern, there are many local services that can support you and your loved ones.
Across the Northern Beaches, there are many local events you can be a part of this Mental Health Month. Check out the calendar of events.
If you need support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
