Northern Beaches residents are an active bunch who embrace sport, recreation, and the outdoor lifestyle so it’s no surprise that 83% of residents cycle for recreation and 26% as a means of transport.

Cycling has many obvious benefits from our health to our hip pockets with lower transport costs, minimal impact on the environment and it helps to reduce traffic and parking congestion on local roads.

This week we welcomed good news that the NSW Government is providing more than $1 million in grant funding to help build more shared paths.

The cash injection will help Council deliver around 2.5 kilometres of shared pathways. Once built it will be easier and safer for all users to move around.

The grant is earmarked to deliver shared paths at the following locations:

•           750 metres from Queenscliff to Freshwater which will connect to the existing cycleway that leads to Manly Wharf and the town centre

•           480 metres adjacent to Allambie and Rodborough roads in Frenchs Forest, which will form part of the active transport link between Manly and Frenchs Forest

•           400 metres through Wingara Reserve to connect the Glen Street community precinct to northern Belrose

•           More than 600 metres along Barrenjoey Road connecting Mona Vale and the B-Line interchange with the existing shared path network

•           270 metres shared path along the eastern and northern edge of Trafalgar Park in Newport to provide a direct connection from the Gladstone Street shared path to Newport Public School

These shared pathways form part of a $710 million investment in walking and cycling infrastructure over the next four years across the state.
