Mayor welcomes Western Sydney metro feedback opportunity

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller has welcomed the news community members can have their say on the NSW Government’s Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport rail project.

“The chance to provide feedback on Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport marks a significant milestone for this public transport project, which will be pivotal to keeping people moving in fast-growing Western Sydney,” Mayor Waller said.

“Importantly for many locals, starting construction on the project this year will provide 14,000 jobs that could support those in Western Sydney and beyond during a time of economic hardship.

“However, the delivery of new multi-billion-dollar metro lines shouldn’t come at the expense of jobs on Sydney’s existing heavy rail network.”

While fully supportive of the Metro project, Mayor Waller said further investment in Western Sydney’s public transport network was also needed.

“It’s great to see the NSW Government getting on with delivering this new public transport connection to Western Sydney International Airport and the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, but our region would benefit from even greater public transport to alleviate pressure on our congested road network,” Mayor Waller said.

“Council continues to advocate to the NSW Government to extend the Sydney Metro Southwest line from Bankstown to Liverpool and to extend the Sydney Trains heavy rail line from Leppington to Western Sydney International Airport, complementing the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project and improving the region’s north-south connectivity.”

Mayor Waller also said Council was doing its bit to ensure the success of the Liverpool region, the future international airport at Badgerys Creek and the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

“Council sees a bright future for Liverpool, with continued investment in commercial operations, transport, freight and education infrastructure bringing new job opportunities for residents and cementing Liverpool as Sydney’s Third CBD,” Mayor Waller said.

“In addition to revitalising the Liverpool CBD through our mixed-use Liverpool Civic Place development and our Public Domain Master Plan, which will pave the way to a greener, more vibrant and active city centre, we are progressing well with plans for a vital transport link between the Liverpool city centre and both the Airport and Aerotropolis.

“The Fifteenth Avenue Smart Transit (FAST) Corridor is our vision for a frequent and rapid public transport connection to the new airport from Sydney's Third CBD.

“We are working with Transport for NSW to ensure a ‘whole of corridor’ high-quality rapid transit design that is future-proofed for emerging technologies such as trackless trams and could also allow us to create new, sustainable communities along the route, helping to reduce sprawl and preserve the unique character of our region.”

Mayor Waller encouraged community members to provide feedback on Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport and the M12 Motorway project, which the NSW Government is also now seeking feedback on following previous community consultation.

“I strongly encourage members of the Liverpool community to have their say to help inform the design of these significant road and rail projects – this is our chance to ensure they are delivered with the community’s needs in mind and will best support our region’s growth,” Mayor Waller said.
