Council wins at Local Government NSW’s Excellence in the Environment Awards

Blue Mountains City Council has won two awards at Local Government NSW’s Excellence in the Environment Awards.

Council won an award for Innovation in Planning, Policies and Decision Making for its Water Sensitive Blue Mountains Strategic Plan (WSBMSP). It sets out the best-practice approaches and design principles Council will follow to manage our city’s waterways and water resources.

The Blue Mountains 2040: Living Sustainably Local Strategic Planning Statement was also highly commended in the Local Sustainability award. Developed with extensive community consultation, the Statement is Council’s long term land use plan, aimed at ensuring the Blue Mountains can respond to the challenges and opportunities for the future.

“These are two of our key projects for the Council and we are very proud of this recognition, particularly as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the World Heritage listing for the Blue Mountains,” CEO Dr Rosemary Dillon said.

The LGNSW Excellence in the Environment Awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements by NSW councils in managing and protecting the environment each year.

Council competed in Category C for all councils in NSW with a population over 70,000 people.

“The WSBMSP is a forward-thinking plan that sets the direction for the way Council manages its water assets into the future. It will help Council better protect the World Heritage values of our City, manage threats to our drinking water catchments, build resilience to climate change and enhance the liveability of our urban areas,” Dr Dillon said.

“Council acknowledges the significant support provided for this project by Water NSW through its Urban Partnerships Program and the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CRCWSC).

“The Blue Mountains 2040: Living Sustainably Local Strategic Planning Statement 

presents the community-shaped vision for land use across our City for the next twenty years, derived from our Community Strategic Plan. It reflects our spectacular World Heritage setting, our local values and the significant contribution we make to the Western Parklands City.”
