Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray will be among an impressive group of special guests attending next month’s official opening of the Kambalda Aquatic Facility.
Minister Murray, who will officially unveil the plaque with Shire of Coolgardie president Mal Cullen on Saturday, November 7, will be joined by Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson, Kalgoorlie MLA Kyran O’Donnell and Mining and Pastoral MLC Kyle McGinn.
Bevan Jones, who is general manager of Gold Fields St Ives which operates near Kambalda and contributed to the project, will also be in attendance.
Next month’s ceremony takes place after the facility was opened to the general public in time for the school holidays on September 26.
It features a 50-metre pool with universal access, a learn-to-swim pool with beach access, renovated change rooms and new administration office.
Other features include upgraded barbecue areas with disabled access and large grassed areas.
The Kambalda Aquatic Facility was joint funded by the Federal Government ($297,000), State Government ($700,000), Gold Fields Australia Foundation ($200,000) and the Shire of Coolgardie.
Cr Cullen viewed it as a key tourism sporting asset for the region.
“The new facility has surpassed our expectations,” he said.
“The pool will not only act as a meeting place for locals, but will attract visitors from throughout neighbouring towns to our shire.
“The Kambalda Aquatic Facility is a drawcard for our region.”
Cr Cullen said the official opening was testament to the patience of community members, whose reward is free entry to both the Kambalda and Coolgardie pools for the entire 2020-21 summer season.
“We acknowledge that our community has spent two summers without access to a local pool,” he said.
As part of the shire’s COVID-19 Risk Management Plan, in line with WA Health Department and Royal Lifesaving Australia guidelines, admission to the Kambalda Aquatic Facility will be capped at 260 at any one time and Coolgardie Pool at 190 people.
Lifeguards on duty will ensure hygiene standards are met with hourly cleaning of change rooms, toilets, tables and disabled equipment.
Staff at each facility will monitor the capacity limits, with the Shire of Coolgardie requesting that patrons respect and plan for those limits while visiting.
The official opening on November 7 is from 10am and will feature market stalls, food vans, live music, family entertainment, bouncy castle and free sausage sizzle.
