A Changing Places facility in the Church Street shopping precinct is making Bayside a more accessible and inclusive destination for people with disabilities and their carers.
Changing Places are specialised facilities that are larger than standard accessible toilets and have extra features including an adult-sized change table, tracking ceiling hoist, privacy screen, peninsular-shaped toilet, shower, and a wider access door.
If a person with a disability cannot stand up or independently move from a wheelchair to a toilet pan, standard accessible toilets are not an option. Without Changing Places, people with high support needs may have to limit the time they can spend away from home; cut short shopping trips, leave events early; restrict work hours, or need to be placed on a public toilet floor to receive care.
The customised facility, which is adjacent to the 21 Well Street carpark, was built alongside a new accessible toilet and refurbishment of the existing standard public toilets. The Changing Places facility can only be accessed with a Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK), which people with a disability or their carers can apply for at masterlocksmiths.com.au/mlak
Since 2014, 152 Changing Places have been built in Australia. Next year, we’re adding another one to this list by building a Changing Places facility in Thomas Street Reserve, Hampton, to service the forthcoming inclusive playground.
