The Shire of Coolgardie has endorsed a service into the Kambalda Airstrip. The proposed service was requested at a recent stakeholders meeting with mining companies operating in the region while advocating the use of a residential workforce.
The Shire recognises that mining companies in the region have a duty of care to provide safe environments for their employees, including shorter travel times to each mine site currently in excess of 2 hours.
It is also expected to provide additional economic benefits for businesses in Kambalda.
At Tuesday’s Council Meeting a proposal was accepted from Perth-based Complete Aviation Group to commence flights into Kambalda Aerodrome from November 1.
The proposed service would utilise Fairchild Metroliner aircraft, with a capacity of nine to 20 seats.
An estimated 90 passengers per week would use the service, via one scheduled flight per day.
As all flights are expected to be made in favourable daylight conditions, CAG would not require air-to-ground communication, guidance or lighting systems.
No refuelling facilities would be provided during the initial stages of the new service, but that would be reviewed.
At present, the Shire has five trained and certified Aerodrome Reporting Officers, but CAG do not at this stage require those services.
Mining companies located south of Kambalda regularly fly workers into Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport before transferring them by bus more than two hours to on-site accommodation.
At a council meeting held in April last year, a resolution was passed to develop a staged implementation of actions for the future use of the Kambalda Airport.
