Hampton Hill Mural to receive restoration

In a win for the Hampton community, the Hampton Hill sign located between 464 - 476 Hampton Street, is due to be restored as part of the Hampton Street Graffiti Removal Trial.

With little to no maintenance over the past 45 years, the mural has been subject to numerous instances of graffiti over the past decade and what seems to be an increased number in the past two years.

The mural, locally known as the ‘Hampton Hill Mural’, is believed to have been installed in the mid to late 1970s and was produced to clearly identify that area of Hampton Street as ‘Hampton Hill’.

Originally the mural extended from 456 to 476 Hampton Street, however over time, part of the mural (456 – 462) has been painted over and is lost to history.

Artist and muralist Campbell, known as Salad Bowl Art is an ex-Sandringham College student with strong ties to Hampton. He said he is looking forward to getting out and doing some painting once State Government restrictions ease.

“Right now, the mural is not demanding any attention but once we restore it and bring out the bright yellow and bright white, people will discover it,” Campbell said.

“A bit of colour in the community goes a long way. It doesn’t matter if it is a sign or a mural, people respond positively to colour.”

Campbell talked about his appreciation for street art around Bayside.

“There’s been so much work in the area. This sign restoration and the art murals, it’s what I wanted to see in the community when I was a kid.”

The Hampton Hill Mural restoration will commence on 02 November 2020.
