We are pleased that the Minister has approved Council's request to amend the Bayside Planning Scheme to apply heritage protection to 38 Grosvenor Street, Brighton.
Council began the process to apply heritage controls to the property in 2019, when the Minister for Planning granted Council’s request to apply interim heritage controls to the property.
Over the past 12 months, Council has been undertaking the planning scheme amendment required to apply permanent heritage controls to the site.
Due to the public submissions received regarding the protection of the house, an independent Planning Panel was appointed to provide recommendations to Council as to whether permanent heritage controls were justified.
The Planning Panel was supportive, and Council adopted the amendment at its 15 September 2020 Ordinary Meeting. Following this, Council requested that the Minister for Planning approve the amendment which has now taken place within the prescribed timeframe for the Minister to make his decision.
Bayside City Council is committed to protecting significant buildings and places that contribute to our municipality's prized character.
In June 2020, Council adopted its Bayside Heritage Action Plan, which guides the identification, protection, management and promotion of Bayside's heritage assets for the next fifteen years. The updated action plan prioritises the commencement of the Mid-Century Modern Heritage Study, which Council is currently in process of undertaking.
Through the implementation of the revised Heritage Action Plan 2020 and the studies outlined within the Plan, Council will continue to fulfil its statutory obligations by identifying and protecting buildings and places of significance.
