Recovery, regeneration and re-ignition are the key themes of a recently awarded recovery project for Onslow.

The Shire of Ashburton recently secured $500,000 in funding from BHP’s Vital Resources Fund that will assist the Shire address challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in Onslow.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said she was thrilled the Shire was a recipient of the BHP Vital Resources Fund and that BHP continue to have a presence in and support the Onslow community.

“I would like to acknowledge this substantial support from BHP and I am confident that with this funding we can look to build resilience amongst our Onslow businesses and create new opportunities to diversify our local economy” said Councilor White.

“The Shire is committed to developing and implementing a targeted Onslow Economic Development and Tourism Program that will stimulate the tourism sector in Onslow.

“The Onslow program will include a targeted destination marketing campaign for increased tourism while working with the community to develop tourism and marketing activities and support local capacity building and product development.

“We will also be able to look at improving the visitor experience at existing tourism attractions, amenities and accommodation.

“The Shire is very excited to begin this program that will increase the profile of Onslow and Ashburton as a unique visitor experience and allow us to share what makes our coastal haven so special with neighbouring regional areas and our fellow Western Australians while we continue to navigate through the ongoing health pandemic”

“The Shire of Ashburton does a great job supporting local businesses in Onslow and creating opportunities to diversify and increase tourism," said Francis Bolzan, Operations Manager for BHP’s Petroleum Australia Unit.

“We’re very proud to be able to give support in this way and see the immediate positive benefits come through to the local community in Onslow,” finished Mr Bolzan.
