Driveways at Dusk to honour fallen Moranbah miners

The lives of those who went to work in the Moranbah mines, and never came home will be honoured through Driveways at Dusk this Friday night.

The lives of those who went to work in the Moranbah mines, and never came home will be honoured through Driveways at Dusk this Friday night.

While the 2020 Moranbah Miners’ Memorial ceremony will be small and invite only due to COVID-19 restrictions, it will be professionally live streamed online to watch where residents can join in a minute’s silence.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said Council encourages residents to #putyourlampsout in a collective show of community respect.

“Together, as we gather at the end of our driveways at 6pm this Friday, we remember the human cost to an industry that is in our DNA,” Mayor Baker said.

“We know how much a fatality resonates in each and every member of our community.

“I commend the committee for this beautiful and genuine concept by asking people to gather at the end of their driveways at dusk and to ask residents to #putyourlampsout.”

Moranbah Miners’ Memorial Committee president Scott Leggett said a wave of overwhelming community support to create homemade lamps pulled at the heartstrings.

“It’s great to see the kids getting creative and involved in the Moranbah Miners’ Memorial Day by participating in making miners’ lamp as part of the school competition we’ve launched,” he said.

“Our fallen workmates are looking down and I bet they’re proud of you Moranbah. It’s incredibly sobering the show of support we’ve had.

“We would have loved a 1200-strong crowd this year under the falling yellow flowers with our bronzed worker but we’ve got to abide by the COVID-19 health advisories.

“Please join us from your Driveways at Dusk. Let’s remember them together.

“We want to thank Councillor-endorsed member of the Moranbah Miners’ Memorial committee – Deputy Mayor Kelly Vea Vea – for her outstanding commitment to this annual ceremony.”
