Visitors to Kerang’s Sir John Gorton Library and the Kerang Skate Park will benefit from safety improvements after Gannawarra Shire Council secured $71,840 from the State Government’s Community Safety Infrastructure Grant.
The funding has been provided to support Council’s $74,840 Atkinson Park - A Safer Precinct for All project, which will involve the installation of a wi-fi hot spot at the Kerang Skate Park, as well as the addition of CCTV cameras at both the Skate Park and the Sir John Gorton Library.
Visitors to the Kerang Skate Park will also benefit from improved lighting and the installation of a smart bench, which features mobile phone and tablet charging facilities.
“The Kerang Skate Park and Sir John Gorton Library precinct are popular locations for people, thanks to current wi-fi facilities at the library and the skate park’s attractions,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.
“This funding will enable Council to install key infrastructure that will improve the safety for people who visit these venues outside of business hours, as well as promote a sense of ownership for people who use these locations frequently.”
The works, which are scheduled to begin in March 2021, complement Northern District Community Health’s Paint the Park mural project, which received funding through Council’s 2019 Community Grants Program.
“Council thanks the State Government for supporting the Atkinson Park - A Safer Precinct for All project and looks forward to rolling out these improvements during 2021,” Mr O’Reilly said.
