Fremantle residents are invited to celebrate the launch of Fremantle’s Containers for Change refund point with a free sausage sizzle next weekend.
On Saturday 14 November from 10am-2pm at the City of Fremantle refund point, next to the Fremantle Recycling Centre, not only will people receive 10 cents for every eligible container they return, they’ll also get a free sausage sizzle and drink.
The first 50 people will also receive a free Ecobag, a handy waterproof bag that holds up to 100 containers.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said returning containers to Fremantle’s Containers for Change refund point was good for the environment and good for the local community.
“Each year Western Australians use more than 1.3 billion drink containers, and sadly many are not recycled and end up in landfill or as litter,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“There are more than 200 refund points authorised Containers for Change refund points operating across WA, with some of those run by local councils and community groups and others by commercial operators.
“For every eligible container that gets returned not only does the person returning it get ten cents, but the refund point also gets six cents as a handling fee.
“We are really pleased with the way the refund point has been set up, it has a great vibe and it’s great to see the sorting team in action, but the best thing about returning your containers to the City of Fremantle refund point is that any profits we make will be invested back into the community, so there’s a double benefit.
“Not only do individuals or community groups benefit directly through the ten cents they get for every container they hand in, they also benefit indirectly through the investments the City makes into things like new playgrounds, better sporting facilities and community grants.”
The entry to the City of Fremantle’s Containers for Change refund point is on Knutsford Street, just around the corner from the Fremantle Recycling Centre.
It’s open from 10am-6pm on Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8am-4pm on Saturday and 8am-2pm on Sunday, and is open to everyone, not just City of Fremantle residents.
There’s also a convenient bag drop point at the City of Fremantle’s administration building at Fremantle Oval on Parry Street.
Containers for Change is a state-wide scheme that targets beverage containers that most commonly end up as litter.
The types of beverage containers covered in the scheme include plastic and glass bottles, liquid paper-board cartons, and steel and aluminium cans between 150 millilitres and three litres. Wine, spirit, milk and cordial bottles are not accepted.
