The third helicopter treatment was undertaken for the 2020-2021 mosquito control season this week.
This was in response to a number of high tides and the heavy rainfall between 31 October and 2 November which resulted in egg hatching.
The total area treated in the Shire was 31 hectares with the application of 160 kg of larvicide.
The majority of the area treated was the tidal foreshore of the Leschenault Estuary with some small areas of the Collie River Foreshore in Clifton Park.
As required by the Department of Health, post treatment surveys to assess the effectiveness are scheduled for Monday, 9 November.
Although adult mosquito populations are reducing, Ross River virus continues to be recovered from mosquitoes traps in the Shire. The Virus has now been isolated from Point Douro, Crimp Crescent wetland and near the John Boyle O’Reilly memorial site at Buffalo Road.
Surveillance will continue as a priority for the Shire’s Environmental Health Officers due to the high risk season which is predicted.
