LED Lights

Work to upgrade more than 951 streetlights to energy efficient LED technology continues throughout the Yass Valley. Crews will be working in Yass this week.

Yass Valley Way update

While the rain is always welcome, the weather has been playing a bit of havoc with this project! The team at Roadworx has had some down time as the majority of tasks cannot be completed safely or satisfactorily in the wet conditions. The shoulder grading is now complete and has made a real difference to visibility in some areas. There has now been over 1.6km completed (subject to some rectification works), and the crew is mixing again and is hopeful of making progress with more sealing completed this week – weather permitting! Council resolved to accept additional scope to this project at the October Council meeting. The supplementary works will include additional sealing of shoulders as well as rehabilitation works and sealing along parts of Old Gap Road. It is expected the works will be completed by early December, including the additional works mentioned above, however, this depends on the weather (there is still a reasonable amount of rain forecast at present). The site will be under constant traffic control, however, delays will be kept to a minimum and Roadworx will continue to liaise with any affected residents.

Remembrance Day

The footpath in front of Memorial Hall will be closed from 10.30am to 11.30am on Remembrance Day (Wednesday, 11 November) while the commemorative ceremony takes place. Groups of up to 100 people will be able to gather for Remembrance Day services after the approval of a one-off exemption from COVID-19 restrictions. The one-off exemption to the Public Health Order increases the current restrictions from 20 people to 100 people, to gather at community war memorials, provided they adhere to social distancing measures and have a COVID-19 Safety Plan in place.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week was marked by a flag-raising and smoking ceremony in front of the Yass Memorial Hall today, Monday, 9 November, at 10.30am followed by historical displays, exhibitions and activities in Memorial Hall until 2.30pm. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander banners will also hang in Comur Street for the duration of the week.

Public Consultation Submissions welcome for Civic Precinct

In February 2020, Council endorsed a ‘wish list’ of projects and resolved to undertake planning and design work so the projects would be ‘shovel ready’ in the event of grant funding opportunities. One of these projects is a Civic Precinct, which would include a new library, community rooms and exhibition spaces, long term Government tenants and the retention of Crago's Mill among other elements. Council is keen to understand if the elements for inclusion in the Civic Precinct meet community needs and expectations. Community members are invited to make a submission on the proposed location and scope of works. To read more and to make a submission: HERE
