Community groups share $50,000 in funding

A new festival that combines tennis, live music and markets is one of five events that will benefit from more than $50,000 in Council funding.

The 2020/21 Community Events, Activities and Projects Grant aims to assist community groups and organisations to deliver events, activities and projects that enhance the lives of local communities.

Funding will be shared by the following organisations:

The Freshwater Festival, hosted by the Freshwater Tennis Club at Richmond Park, will be by held on the first Friday of each month from 5.30pm to 10.30pm and include an inter-club tennis tournament, live music, food vendors and market stalls. The event will take a hiatus in February and March due to expected wet weather.

The Cairns Children’s Museum will use its funding to celebrate International Day of Mathematics on 14 March 2021 by hosting Pi Day – an educational festival of circles at the Tanks Arts Centre.

Socially Effective Inc has established an agreement with YEP Entrepreneurship Facilitators to deliver the proposed Indigenous Youth in Innovation program from 10-21 December at CQUniversity.

Japanese Society of Cairns will deliver the Japan Bon Dance Festival on 11 September 2021. The not-for-profit organisation has delivered the event since 2012, which is a celebration of Japanese culture in Cairns and that fosters goodwill and friendship.

Finally, Nga Matawka Inc. is proposing to deliver Waitangi Day and a series of supporting workshops to celebrate and acknowledge the New Zealand Maori community on 6 February 2021. The celebration will include live entertainment, cultural performances, market stalls, children games and a traditional Hangi.
