Council introduces braille bin stickers to support residents

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has introduced new braille bin stickers for residents living with vision impairment or blindness.

The braille bin stickers will support residents who are blind or have low vision to identify each of their bins, as Council continues to roll out its four bin kerbside service.

Council’s Director Assets and Operations, Shane Walden said Council had received some valuable feedback from residents which highlighted the challenges that residents living with blindness or vision impairment face with the addition of new bins.

“Council reached out to Vision Australia who helped with the production of the new braille bin stickers,” Mr Walden said.

Council will supply the braille stickers for bins, which will be available free of charge on request.  The stickers will identify the following bin types - glass-only, FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics), recycling, general waste and kitchen caddy.

“The braille stickers are a simple, but effective, way to support our community who are blind or have low vision and want to lead independent lives,” he said.

In early 2020 Council introduced its four bin kerbside service to provide a more responsible and sustainable collection service while responding to the waste and recycling crisis.

The new service provides households with a new glass-only bin, FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) bin and kitchen caddy, in addition to existing recycling and general waste bins.

Residents can obtain the new braille bin stickers by calling Council’s customer service team on (03) 5422 0333 or by visiting bins.
