November is an important month for recognising violence against women.

On 20 November it’s White Ribbon Day and we are encouraging the community to stand up and say no to domestic violence.

In previous years we have come together and walked from Queenscliff to Manly, but due to COVID-19, 2020 will be different.

Instead we want the Northern Beaches to mark the day by joining a friend or two, wearing a white shirt and taking a walk together.

To help raise awareness of this issue, while you’re out walking, post an image on social media with the hashtag #BeachesSaysNo.

Trish Bramble from the Manly Warringah Women’s Resource Centre says that it’s a myth that this type of violence doesn’t happen here on the Northern Beaches. In reality, rates of domestic violence are consistent with other areas of Sydney and New South Wales.

“In fact, since COVID, we have seen an increase in women reaching out to us through our local networks.

“For some the challenges have been huge, as they have become more isolated - placing them at greater risk,” said Ms Bramble.

For those experiencing domestic violence, there is a wide range of support available with details via Council’s website.

However, the first step may be calling the 24-hour 1800 RESPECT hotline to have a conversation with someone who understands and can help.
