Friday, 13 November: At Cockburn Council’s Ordinary Council Meeting on Thursday night, 12 November, the Council adopted several recommendations, including $1.45m worth of community grants and donations, the Coogee Beach Foreshore Management Plan 2020-2070 and the inclusion of a Hamilton Hill fig tree on the City’s significant tree list.   For more information, see the Agenda opens in a new window. A 50-year plan to guide management of our highly valued Coogee Beach foreshore against future coastal erosion and inundation has been adopted by Cockburn Council. opens in a new window The Coogee Beach Foreshore Management Plan 2020-2070 recommends strategies and short and long term actions to manage the coast’s natural and built assets which are likely to be affected by hazardous rising sea levels predicted later this century.   Six objectives to guide future transport and land use planning, including pursuing a future rapid public transport corridor connecting Cockburn and Fremantle, are part of an Integrated Transport Strategy 2020-2030 adopted by Cockburn Council. opens in a new window The strategy includes acknowledging the significance of Manning Ridge and that it be given priority in planning discussions with Main Roads WA for its Cockburn Coast Drive proposal.

A 1,000-strong petition calling for an upgrade to a dangerous rail crossing on Rockingham Road in Spearwood has made it into WA Parliament. opens in a new window On Wednesday members of the Spearwood Residents Association joined lead petitioner Monique Gray on the steps of Parliament to present the petition to upper house Labor backbencher Pierre Yang.

Lakeland Senior High School has ensured the sacrifices of 13 identified WA Indigenous servicepeople will be forever commemorated on the school’s grounds. opens in a new window The South Lake school this week unveiled an Indigenous Servicepersons Garden, commemorating the men and women of Indigenous heritage who fought at Gallipoli, to coincide with Naidoc Week and Remembrance Day.

Tuesday, 10 November: Providing safe communities and preventing crime are a priority for the City of Cockburn and as we continually improve ways to achieve this, we’re collaborating with Edith Cowan University in a research project. opens in a new window Local residents aged 15 years and older and local business owners, are encouraged to complete a survey to help us understand their concerns and experiences of crime and community safety in Cockburn.   Monday, 9 November: Cockburn residents are encouraged to plant bird-friendly gardens and leave out a clean freshly-filled bird bath to help attract native birds, rather than feeding them. opens in a new window The City’s Environment team is reminding locals that the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ Parks and Wildlife Service says feeding birds can alter their natural behaviour and seriously harm their health. It is also now an offence in Western Australia to feed native fauna, including birds, without a licence. Fines of up to $20,000 are part of updated regulations under Section 155 of the West Australian Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.
