Join us for Less Waste Week

Join us for less waste week!

We are putting on a series of free zoom workshops with some of the best names in sustainability. A prize is up for grabs for one lucky attendee at each workshop!

Monday: Zero/Less Waste on a Budget with Lindsay Miles from https://treadingmyownpath.com/ About the workshop: Ever feel like going “zero waste” is only for people not trying to stick to a budget? Zero waste is not about buying more stuff. Plenty of things that lead to living zero waste can be done for free! This presentation with question and answer time is for everyone interested in reducing their waste footprint without spending a fortune on ‘zero waste products’. Presenter Lindsay Miles is passionate about living a life with less waste and less stuff, and she’s on a mission to help others to do so too. If you’d like to learn how to make small changes for big impacts, this is for you! We’ll talk about budget savvy options to avoid single-use packaging, shopping alternatives and reusable options. We’ll also talk about the importance of the sharing economy and community initiatives in reducing our waste and raising awareness. You will leave with a better understanding of recycling and plenty of ideas to reduce their waste without buying new stuff – and your own “Zero Waste Plan” to get you started. One lucky attendee will win a signed copy of Lindsay's new book, "The Less Waste No Fuss Kitchen: Simple steps to shop, cook and eat sustainably" (winner must be a resident of Yass Valley LGA and be present on the call).  More about our presenter: Lindsay Miles is an educator, speaker, author and passionate zero waste/plastic-free living advocate helping others live more meaningful lives with less waste and less stuff. She has been sharing ideas, tips, tricks and strategies on her website Treading My Own Path since 2013. Her first book, Less Stuff, was published in 2019 and her second, The Less Waste No Fuss Kitchen was published in June 2020. Originally from the UK, Lindsay now lives in Perth, Western Australia. This workshop is part of Council’s “Hands On for Less Waste” Project, and is made possible through funding from the NSW Environmental Trust.  Link to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIkcO-qqTMoH9SqHkkXraev7P8hlUl_3xvp

Tuesday: Purposeful Refashioning with Jane Milburn from https://textilebeat.com/ , author of “Slow Clothing” and Churchill Fellow About the workshop: Since lockdown sparked interest in all things DIY, now is the time to explore our inherent desire to work with our hands and discover the maker within. Play-based upcycling of dormant clothing from your wardrobe or opshop is a great way to start thinking more about adaptation and resourcefulness when it comes to what we wear. Sustainability consultant and author Jane Milburn has been a slow fashion practitioner all her life which springs from a love of natural fibres and learned creativity. Join Jane for a Zoom session where we chat about Slow Clothing actions and choices to reduce our material footprint, learn to make yarn from old t-shirts, and discuss creative ways to bring new life to old favourites or cast-offs. What to bring to this session: An old cotton t-shirt (preferably jersey knit) and some scissors, any dormant garments you are considering upcycling so we can discuss options. One lucky attendee will win a copy of Jane's book, “Slow Clothing: Finding meaning in what we wear” (winner must be a resident of Yass Valley LGA and be present on the call). Wednesday: Low Waste Gardening with Ryan Lungu from the Canberra Environment Centre https://www.canberraenvironment.org/ About the workshop: Gardening and growing food are extremely rewarding and useful activities, but like everything else they can sometimes result in unnecessary waste.  Join Ryan Lungu, Director of the Canberra Environment Centre for a conversation on reducing waste in the garden by:

Making your own organic fertilisers and insecticides Growing from seed and saving seeds Making your own mulch Using recycled materials in the garden

Pick some weeds from your garden and together we will make an organic fertiliser! You will need a bucket, some water and freshly pulled weeds from your garden. One lucky attendee will win free attendance at a Canberra Environment Centre workshop of their choice (to be taken within the next 6 months. Winner must be a resident of Yass Valley LGA and be present on the call). This workshop is part of Council's Hands On for Less Waste Project, and is made possible by funding from the NSW Environmental Trust.
