Corangamite Shire Council has welcomed the start of work on the Hamilton Highway near Lismore.
Regional Roads Victoria will rebuild a 500-metre stretch west of Mundy Gully Creek at a cost of $375,000.
Corangamite Shire Mayor Ruth Gstrein said the work would improve the safety of a vital stretch in the region’s agricultural supply chain.
“Council welcomes this investment by the State Government which will benefit Shire residents and businesses bringing in supplies and sending out products,” Cr Gstrein said.
“The Hamilton Highway is an essential route for wool and grain producers in the north of our Shire.
“It’s also a gateway to the Volcanic Lakes and Plains Tourism Region. Improved safety will be great news for locals and visitors as Melbourne residents come out of lockdown and start taking summer holiday road trips.”
“This particular section takes about 2600 vehicles per day, including more than 500 heavy or commercial vehicles.
“We welcome any improvements that benefit agriculture and tourism which are substantial contributors to our Shire’s economy.”
“Obviously there will be changed conditions, so we encourage drivers to plan ahead for delays and follow traffic management directions.”
Roadworks are scheduled from 7 am-6 pm weekdays until late November, weather permitting, with alternating lane closures and 40km/h speed limits.
“The Victorian Government has invested $375,000 into rebuilding this section of the Hamilton Highway near Lismore, which will ensure it is stronger, smoother and safer,” Regional Roads Victoria Regional Director (South Western) Vanessa Schernickau said.
“The works involve rebuilding the pavement and road surface layers, before a final seal is applied to the newly built road surface to ensure its longevity.
“We thank everyone for their patience while these vital works are completed and we urge drivers to travel safely through the worksite, for their own safety and the safety of our workers.”
