Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller has praised the Council-led 2168 Children’s Parliament which has won the Outstanding Project Promoting Social Cohesion and Community Harmony gong at the ZEST Awards 2020.

The 2168 Children’s Parliament is a ground-breaking initiative in Liverpool which was inspired by the Scottish Children’s Parliament. It is made up of 44 students in years 5 and 6 from 11 primary schools across the 2168 postcode.

“It is an honour to see a Council-led initiative earning recognition at the ZEST Awards, which is renowned for acknowledging community work in Western Sydney. It is wonderful to see this project making a difference in the lives of the current and future youth of Liverpool,” Mayor Waller said.

“Winning the Outstanding Project Promoting Social Cohesion and Community Harmony award is further recognition of the outstanding achievements of the 2168 Children’s Parliament.”

The Parliament was established to improve children’s capacity to engage in civic life by giving a voice to their ideas and aspirations, while increasing knowledge, building understanding of their civic rights and responsibilities through participation in various activities and workshops.

Members of the 2168 Children’s Parliament are building strong relationships with their peers and are exploring practical ways to strengthen social cohesion in the broader community.

The 2168 Children’s Parliament participates in regular workshops and meetings with the aim of finding solutions to real-life situations and to implement changes in the participating schools.

The 2168 Strong Children and Communities Project is delivered by Liverpool City Council under the 2168 Communities for Children Program, a Federal Government Early Intervention and Prevention Initiative. Funding and support for the Project is facilitated by Mission Australia’s Miller Pathways.
