WA Seniors Week 2020, which runs from Sunday 8 November to Monday 16 November, is fast approaching with a number of events and activities set to take place in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.
WA Seniors Week 2020 is a special time of celebration for Western Australian seniors with events and activities being held across the state to acknowledge seniors and show appreciation for their valued contribution to society.
Local events include the Young @ HEART program, held for over 60s every Monday from 10am to 12pm at the Margaret River HEART. During Seniors Week, Young @ HEART on Monday 9 November will feature talented local musicians Scott Wise (vocals and guitar) and Gary Burke (vocals and bass). All over 60’s visitors are welcome to stop by and enjoy some entertaining tunes while also checking out the latest art exhibition by students from Margaret River Senior High School.
Music lovers are also invited to experience jazz in the Margaret River Library on Thursday 19 November from 6pm to 7.30pm with music to accompany stories from Tales from a Wine-Stained Band Table. The book by Genelle Jones, a writer, music-lover and adventurer from Baldivis, contains a series of 16 short stories which will be accompanied by music from Robbie Jones as part of this special event. The duo will bring to life Genelle’s first collection of tales about musicians on and off less than glamorous stages. Those who wish to attend can book by calling 08 9780 5600 or by email to [email protected].
The Margaret River Recreation Centre will be running its current seniors sessions including Supermovers, Strength for Life and Aqua as well as holding a special 30 minute talk on preventing falls and the importance of balance training, which will be held on Friday 13 November at 12.30pm. Bookings for the session can be made by calling the Margaret River Recreation Centre on 08 9780 5620 or by email to [email protected].
Community Development Officer Kim Rosenfeld acknowledged the importance of WA Seniors Week in recognising the contribution seniors make to the community.
“WA Seniors Week is a great chance to show our appreciation for seniors,” she said. “Seniors contribute a huge amount to the vibrancy, diversity and success of our community and are highly active in so many aspects of our day to day life whether it’s volunteering, helping with grandkids, taking part in local community groups and clubs and so much more.”
“I encourage local seniors who may like to try something new to use WA Seniors Week as a good excuse to come along to one of the fantastic local events happening at the Margaret River HEART, the Margaret River Library or the Recreation Centre.”
