Signs to be installed in Blue Mountains to help save wildlife

Signs to be installed in Blue Mountains to help save wildlife

Residents and visitors travelling through the Blue Mountains will be reminded to watch out for wildlife thanks to new signage.

Mayor Mark Greenhill wrote to the NSW State Government, on behalf of Blue Mountains City Council, proposing koala and wildlife signage be installed in strategic locations throughout the City of the Blue Mountains. The State Government agreed with the request.

WIRES have funded the signs and Transport for NSW will fund the installation of the seven permanent signs at:

Mitchell's Pass near Lennox Bridge. Westbound on the Great Western Highway at Lapstone, Faulconbridge and Katoomba, and Eastbound on the Great Western Highway at Blackheath, Woodford and Blaxland.

Temporary Variable Message Signs will also be displayed at Bells Line of Road and at the M4 Western Motorway at Lapstone.

Mayor Greenhill said: “I have been concerned about our wildlife. With between 70 and 80 per cent of the World Heritage Area impacted by the 2019-2020 bushfires, we have seen more native animals close to Blue Mountains roads and built up areas.

“We must do what we can to keep our native animals safe. I hope motorists will see these signs and take careful note.”
