Do you have chemical products lying around your home or shed and not sure of how to dispose of them safely?
You can register for a Detox your Home event which allows you to dispose of unwanted household chemicals for free without harming your health or the environment.
The free household chemical collection service is coming to Lilydale from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 21 November.
The Detox your Home collection service is administered by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with local councils and is funded by the Victorian landfill levy.
Anyone wanting to access the service will need to register their interest via the Sustainability Victoria website or call 1300 363 744. The collection point address will be provided upon registration.
Prior to arriving, please ensure that:
items are clearly labelled and placed in the empty boot of your car or ute tray you have your confirmation email available for event staff to confirm your order number on arrival only one person per vehicle attends. Please remain in your vehicle while trained chemists collect materials. You won’t need to unload anything yourself remember to follow all current public health measures at the time, including wearing a face covering and staying home if you feel unwell.Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Kylie Spears, said leaving unwanted household chemicals around the home, garage or garden shed increased the risk of accidents.
“Your house and garage may be full of toxic products that you might not even consider to be dangerous. But those bottles of weed killer and car and pool cleaning products are all made with chemicals that can pose a risk,” Cr Spears said.
“Inappropriately disposing of these types of chemicals yourself can also significantly harm the environment and pose a risk to public health,” she said.
“Detox your Home is a safe, free and easy-to-use service to dispose of highly toxic household chemicals. Best of all, the collected items are recycled rather than being sent to landfill,” Cr Spears added.
The following safety measures should be taken when transporting chemicals:
