Media release from the Office of The Hon Mark Coulton MP:
Broken Hill residents and businesses will reap the rewards of a $310,000 investment by the Federal Coalition Government to revamp footpaths along Blende Street.
Federal Member for Parkes and Minister for Local Government Mark Coulton was joined by Broken Hill City Council Mayor Darriea Turley AM and General Manager James Roncon to discuss the project, which is being funded under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.
“It’s fantastic to see plans for Blende Street footpath upgrades are charging ahead using funds under the LRCI program,” Mr Coulton said.
“Removing the existing deteriorated footpath and constructing a 2.4-metre wide path with accessibility ramps will improve pedestrian safety and enable access for those with mobility challenges.
“This is exactly the type of work the Federal Government is pleased to support - to create local job opportunities, while delivering lasting benefits.
“The flow-on impacts of this project are significant, with enhanced productivity on the cards for local businesses as a result of improved pedestrian access.”
Mr Coulton said in the 2020-21 Budget, the Australian Government announced a $1 billion extension of the LRCI program, following strong community and local government support.
“This extension will see Broken Hill City Council receive more than double the LRCI funding it received under the first round, bringing Council’s total allocation to $977,101, which is excellent news for the local community,” he said.
Cr Turley said Council has welcomed the Federal Government funds that have made the project possible.
“Council made a commitment under its Active Transport Plan to make upgrades to the city's footpaths in high-priority areas over the next 10 years,” Cr Turley said.
“This funding will allow us to make significant progress in this endeavour, with this particular project targeting the Blende Street area.
“I wish to thank the Federal Government for its support in helping us improve accessibility in the CBD.”
The first section of Blende Street footpath works will commence in front of the city’s fire station.
