Community initiatives receive $44,000 boost from Council

A total of $44,750 funding has been awarded to nine community projects as part of Byron Shire Council’s annual Community Initiatives Program.

“Council is proud to provide this funding program each year for community initiatives that stand out because they fill a need and have the potential to inspire people and change lives,” Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson said.

This year, grants of $5000 have been awarded to the following recipients:

Eureka Hall – much-needed kitchen upgrade for this community hub Bangalow Koalas – continuing their work to create a koala corridor from Byron Bay to Repentance Creek Spaghetti Circus – launching a scholarship program for kids Mullum SEED’s Significant Trees Project – showcasing incredible and rare trees in Byron Shire Queer Family Northern Rivers – supporting greater social connection, including two events for the LGBTQIA+ community Bangalow Lions Club -  extending the Combatting Social Isolation for Seniors during Covid-19 to include the whole community. Bunyarra Culture Collective – restoring cultural practice so it can be shared with the community. Brunswick Valley Landcare – promote the educational benefits and increase visitation to the Maslem Arborertum Byron Multicultural Inc has been awarded $4750 to understand the community’s priorities and develop a resources hub

“I congratulate all of the funding recipients for their fantastic initiatives and the meaningful work they do on the ground with our community.

“Many of this year’s funding recipients are reaching out to support people in minority groups in our community which I think speaks to the kind and caring nature of our community – especially when times are tough,” Mayor Richardson said.

While the Community Initiatives funding program has concluded for 2020-21, community groups are encouraged to find out more about Council’s Community Initiatives Program any time of the year on Council’s website.
