Councillors endorsed a review of land assets owned or managed by Yass Valley Council. The report makes recommendations in relation to land, which is potentially surplus to Council operational or community requirements. The recommendations include considering the disposal of land, updating leases and undertaking further reports following the completion of Council’s Open Space Strategy. The preparation of this strategy will be included in the 2021/22 Operational Plan.
Yass Soldiers ClubCouncil resolved to defer a decision regarding a request from the Yass Soliders Club to purchase Council land at the rear of the Club pending the preparation of a traffic plan to enable continuous vehicle and pedestrian access from Meehan Street through to Lead Street. A future report will be presented to Council to consider disposal of the land following completion of this traffic assessment and plan and discussion with the Soldiers Club and other interested parties.
Community GrantsThe following grants will be awarded under Council’s 2020/21 Community Grants Program:
Binalong Progress Association – $2,720 – floor repairs to hall of historic courthouse. Binalong Swimming Club – $2,095 – storage reel and lane ropes. Bowning Public School P&C – $4,000 – shade sail for playground. Murrumbateman Little Athletics – $2,053 – shipping container to store equipment. Sutton Pony Club – $3,804 – replacement tank, repair of roof and guttering and shade sail. Yass Early Childhood Centre – $1,265 – painting of the Centre fascia, walls and fence. Yass Netball Association – $700 – first aid kits, post pads and club banner. Yass Public School P&C – $3,000 – canteen mural and bathroom art. Yass Roos Australian Football Club – $4,000 – replacement of goal posts. Yass Roos Australian Football Club – $4,000 – goal post pads and equipment storage unit. Yass Swimming Club – $725 – portable digital i-clocks.Applications for a second round of Community Grants will be invited in early 2021. If there are any surplus funds after this second round, the money will be added to next year’s grants budget.
Cloth nappy rebatesCouncil has resolved to consider a cloth nappy rebate scheme as part of the 2021/22 budget process.
Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant – extension of programCouncil has accepted $1,020,648 in funding provided by the Australian Government under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. Council determined to spend the money on the gravel resheeting of Council’s unsealed road network. This allocation of funding will be the first step in re-establishing an annual resheeting program for the rural road network.
John Lewis Williams BequestIn August 2017, Council considered a bequest from the Estate of the late John Lewis Williams, which included a generous donation of $122,000 to Council to support the advancement of the interests of young people of Yass. Following serious consideration and consultation with the Williams family, a decision was reached to forward the bequest to the Yass District Education Foundation to provide financial assistance to young people in the Yass Valley for education support and development in their chosen careers. Council also recommended that the financial support provided through the Yass District Education Foundation be known as the ‘John Lewis Williams Award’ and a representative of the Williams family be invited to present the award to the successful recipient(s) each year.
