Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will undertake land repairs in the Harvey Street area (Toowoomba), with work beginning from 30 November 2020.
As of result of the work required, TRC Environment and Community portfolio lead Councillor Tim McMahon said Council would have to close the affected area to the public to allow time for the repairs to be completed.
“While it’s disappointing we will have to close two trails while the work is undertaken, it’s important we get in and do the necessary land repairs before it becomes a larger problem,” he said.
“Council understands this is a popular time of year for trail users however, the work is required to prevent the erosion and failure of one of our critical fire management trails, and as such, safety must be our first priority.
“By not repairing this area at the present time it could lead to long-term closures for both the firebreak and the network of mountain bike trails in this location.
“The repairs weren’t able to be completed sooner as we had to wait for the recent fuel reduction burn in Jubilee Park while fuel levels were low.”
As part of the work the Jubilee Bridle Trail (also called the top firebreak) and the Top Shelf mountain bike trail, both between Wooldridge Street and Harvey Street, will be closed.
A construction zone will apply to the area from 30 November 2020 until 8 January 2021.
“We understand how well used these trails are, so Council will be completing the work as quickly as we can so they can be open to the public once again,” Cr McMahon said.
“Should the project be completed ahead of time these trails will re-open earlier.
“Council will keep park users updated throughout the project as to likely opening dates of both trails.
“Construction machinery and vehicles will be frequently accessing the Bridle Trail between Wooldridge Street and Harvey Street and therefore this construction zone will pose a risk to public safety should the closure be ignored.
“Council thanks members of the public for their understanding during the completion of this project.”
Barriers and signage were installed on Thursday 26 November with the closure coming into effect on Monday 30 November, to identify the area affected by this closure. Visitors may access through openings in the barriers over the coming weekend, however, all access points will be closed from Monday morning.
Barriers and signage will be in place to identify the area affected by this closure.
