Construction on a new amenities block at Nell E Robinson Park in Kearneys Spring that will deliver modern and accessible facilities will start this week.

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Environment and Community Committee Chair Councillor James O’Shea said the new amenities block would provide a better experience for users.

“Council is committed to ensuring that all members of our community have an opportunity to participate in sport and have equal access to our playing fields and sporting facilities,” Cr O’Shea said.

“The new amenities block will give sporting groups, schools, personal trainers, residents and everyone else equal access to facilities regardless of ability or gender.”

Cr O’Shea said the project was required to replace the ageing amenities block constructed in 1981 which is nearing the end of its life.

“The existing amenities building will be demolished and a new building which meets current building standards and facility demand will be constructed,” he said.

“The new facility will include people with disabilities compliant toilets, ambulant compliant toilets, unisex toilets, unisex showers, a first-aid room and a multi-functional space.

“A new pedestrian walkway to connect a disability parking bay in the car park to the new amenities block is also being delivered as part of the project.”

TRC Finance and Business Strategy Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said the project was being delivered through Council’s Pandemic Response Investment Program.

“The renewal is one of the projects being accelerated as part of our pandemic response,” Cr McDonald said.

“This is one of the projects which has been designed specifically to provide genuine opportunities for the private sector with a strong focus on local suppliers first.

“As such, it’s pleasing to see that Toowoomba-based construction company Taddio Building Group has been awarded the design and construction tender. In addition to this, only local subcontractors and suppliers will be engaged which is a great result for our community.”

The project has been prioritised in Netball Queensland's State Wide Facilities Strategy (2018-25) and Council’s Sport, Active Recreation and Healthy Living Plan (2019-26).

Construction is expected to be completed in May 2021, weather permitting.

Construction works will generally take place Monday to Friday between the hours of 6.30am and 6.30pm.

Council will seek to minimise disruptions where possible and thanks the community for its patience and co-operation during construction.
