It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…in Burnie

Published on 01 December 2020

Street decorations are up, the City’s new Christmas Tree is being prepped for its inaugural lighting, the Plaza Arcade is undergoing a very Christmassy transformation and a Christmas Family Fun event has been announced!

Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said “It was disappointing when we had to make the hard decision to cancel Burnie’s Christmas Parade and the New Years’ Eve Bite & Brew events due to COVID-19 restrictions and we hope that the pre-Christmas entertainment and events that we have planned in their place will assist our community to celebrate the festive season at the end of a trying year.”

Lock the evening of Friday 18 of December in your calendar for the Lighting of the NEW Christmas Tree. The lighting system is almost in place on the Norfolk Pine at St Georges Church on the corner of Mount and Cattley Streets. Keep an eye on Council’s website and socials for further details on this event.

From Tuesday 1 December the Plaza Arcade Christmas will host an Aussie Christmas, an installation which allows you to produce your very own Christmas video clip. The large backdrop is also a perfect photo opportunity. Simply download the EyeJack APP and see your artwork come to life, save it and share with your friends.

The Plaza Arcade Christmas will also host a Winter Wonderland themed grotto which will open on Thursday 10 December. Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa and work in his workshop.

Another date for the calendar is Saturday 19 December. Council will be holding a Christmas Family Fun Time event at the Wivenhoe Recreation Ground. The COVID Safe event will consist of 3 ticketed sessions - 10am, 1pm and 4pm. Each event has a limit number of spaces available so please register now at www.burnietickets.com.au/event/12017

Burnie City Council has been working in partnership with Business North West to deliver some of these Christmas initiatives.

Council requests that all patrons observe social distancing and practice good hygiene as directed by the State Government COVID-Safe measures in place. Hand sanitizer will be available. If you are unwell, please do not attend the event.
