Kimbriki’s Eco House and Garden team has completed an inspiring reuse and recycling initiative, which saw Avalon Public School’s old roofing materials end up with a new look, a new life, and a new home at Government House.
Normally the roofing materials would have been deposited at Kimbriki’s metal pile for recycling. However, Kimbriki’s Senior Ecologist Peter Rutherford saw an opportunity to reuse the materials to create wicking garden beds. These specialised garden beds are handcrafted onsite from the roofing sheets and recycled timber and use 60-80 per cent less water than conventional garden beds.
Kimbriki’s Eco House and Garden team attended Government House in September to install the Kimbriki wicking garden beds in the grounds at Government House, and again in November to plant out a selection of lettuce and greens, and establish possum protection netting. On both occasions the team was incredibly lucky to be met by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales who joined in planting a selection of seedlings in the repurposed garden bed.
This festive season remember to Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and make a conscious effort to limit the number of items ending up in landfill.
