Council invites everyone to celebrate and recognise International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) today (Thursday 3 December).
IDPwD is a United Nations observed day that aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people living with a disability and to celebrate their achievements and contributions.
The theme for this is all about ‘seeing the ability in disability’.
Due to COVID-19, the annual dinner dance won’t be held in person, instead this year’s celebrations will be held online and feature an exclusive dance workshop with hip hop crew, Inkrewsive—a fully accessible posse who create original hip hop dance, music and hip hop theatre.
An interview with inspiring local resident and athlete, Nathan Luke will be broadcast on Council’s website and social media. Nathan has a long list of sporting achievements at both state and national levels; and is also studying biochemistry at Melbourne University, with plans to further his studies to become a doctor.
There will also be an opportunity to register your interest for some come and try sessions to be hosted by FIDA (Victorian Football Integration Development Association) in partnership with Kyneton and Gisborne football netball clubs in 2021. The FIDA league provides Victorians with an intellectual disability the opportunity to participate in Australian Rules Football.
See International Day of People with Disability to get dancing, and find out more about Nathan’s achievements and the FIDA sessions. You can also subscribe to Council’s Disability eNews for information about Council programs and local services for people with a disability.
