Wyndham City is continuing to lead the pack in being a Smart City.
Council was named a finalist in this year’s Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand awards in the Data Leadership category for its Smart Parking technology.
Wyndham City Mayor Adele Hegedich said the honour follows Council taking out the prestigious Smart City Strategy category at last year’s awards for the Wyndham Smart City Strategy 2019-2024.
“These national awards, which were held online, recognise the efforts of some of the most advanced smart city projects across the country and New Zealand,” Cr Hegedich said.
“Even though we didn’t walk away with an award this year, to have been named as a finalist at these awards two years in a row is a testament to the hard work of our Smart City team and Council’s commitment to using smart technology to deliver practical solutions.”
“The Smart Parking technology is among many projects Council has delivered to establish Wyndham as one of the leading smart cities both in Australia and worldwide.”
Wyndham City Smart Cities portfolio holder, Councillor Sahana Ramesh, said the smart parking technology, which has been installed across more than 2000 individual parking bays in the Werribee City Centre and surrounds, uses underground vehicle detection sensors to determine, in real time, the occupancy of a parking space.
“This technology provides Council with crucial data about car parking, ensuring Council is delivering fit-for-purpose parking that aligns with the needs of visitors and businesses,” Cr Ramesh said.
“As our community comes out of lockdown the data generated from this technology is proving invaluable in helping us understand how the City is operating, being utilised and performing economically.”
“Council will also launch a Smart Parking app in coming weeks which will direct drivers to available car parks, helping them find a space sooner.”
