Crows Nest is to get an additional 1,200 square metres of much-needed open space with the creation of a new plaza space and pedestrian link between the existing Hume Street Park and the Willoughby Road commercial area.
Council first identified the need for additional space in Crows Nest in 2009. This need was examined in more detail as part of the Crows Nest / St Leonards Planning Study – Precinct 1 in 2012.
A preferred option to expand Hume Street Park was adopted in 2015. Since then, Council has purchased properties and prepared the detailed design plans for the first stage of work.
The work to deliver the adopted vision for the expanded park is being delivered in stages, as funding permits. Development consent for Stage One of the project was granted in 2018.

Stage One of the Hume Street Park expansion project will include a central grassed area, pathways, seating and gardens, as well as terraces for outdoor dining and a pedestrian link from the park to the popular shops and eateries on Willoughby Road.
Properties at 43 - 49 Hume Street and 90-92 Willoughby Road will be demolished to make way for the new plaza space and pedestrian link.
When the new Metro opens in 2024, thousands of people are expected to use the new pedestrian link during peak hour to walk between the station and the village.

Major demolition of the four properties will commence shortly and will continue into the new year. This will be followed by a provisional stand-down period, during which some additional investigations will be undertaken. Construction is then planned to commence in March 2021.
Stage One of the Hume Street Park expansion project is expected to be completed in September 2021.
Inclusive of the property acquisition costs, North Sydney Council has spent $15.7 million on the Hume Street Park expansion project to date. The Council has also received a $3.5 million grant from the NSW Government Precinct Support Scheme to contribute to Stage one of the project.
