Eleven community groups have received $28,362 in funding under Council’s 2020-2021 Community Grants Program.
Community Grants aim to encourage the implementation of projects and initiatives that contribute to the achievement of eight identified strategies of the Community Strategic Plan, including the running of events to facilitate creative participation in community life.
“Council’s financial support to community organisations is needed more than ever, as COVID-19 has presented many challenges and prevented many community groups from fundraising in their usual ways during 2020”, said Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey.
“Grants programs are a way for Council to provide financial assistance to help community organisations continue their worthwhile and generous work in the local government area.”
The following local groups and community projects received funding in the most recent round:
Binalong Progress Association – $2,720 – floor repairs to hall of historic courthouse. Binalong Swimming Club – $2,095 – storage reel and lane ropes. Bowning Public School P&C – $4,000 – shade sail for playground. Murrumbateman Little Athletics – $2,053 – shipping container to store equipment. Sutton Pony Club – $3,804 – replacement tank, repair of roof and guttering and shade sail. Yass Early Childhood Centre – $1,265 – painting of the Centre fascia, walls and fence. Yass Netball Association – $700 – first aid kits, post pads and club banner. Yass Public School P&C – $3,000 – canteen mural and bathroom art. Yass Roos Australian Football Club – $4,000 – replacement of goal posts. Yass Roos Australian Football Club – $4,000 – goal post pads and equipment storage unit. Yass Swimming Club – $725 – portable digital i-clocks.Yass Roos Secretary, Jenene Forlonge, said the $8,000 in grants awarded to the Australian Football Club would allow the club to replace goal posts and purchase equipment storage.
“On behalf of the Yass Roos, we would just like to say how much we appreciate the two grants that we received from Yass Valley Council. The funding means we can update the goal posts to some of the best in the competition and purchase new pads to protect the players from injury if they happen to hit the posts,” Ms Forlonge said.
“We will also be able to build some storage cages in the canteen area to securely store all of our equipment. Once again, thank you, Yass Valley Council.”
Applications for a second round of 2020-21 Community Grants will be invited in early 2021. If there are any surplus funds after this additional round the money will be added to next year’s grants budget.
