Tuesday 15th December 2020
West Tamar Council Mayor Christina Holmdahl is pleased to announce the winners of the Design Awards for 2020 as Stoney Rise Cellar Door at Gravelly Beach for ‘Best Non Residential Project’, and The Boathouse in Deviot for ‘Best New Single Dwelling’.
The winners received a Tasmanian hand-crafted specialty timber peg by Brad Latham, which was presented at today’s Council Workshop to Lou Holyman, owner of Stoney Rise Cellar Door and Murray Griffiths from My Build Collective, designers and builders of The Boathouse.
Council has been formally recognising good design in the municipality through the Design Awards which began in 2016 and aims to encourage good design in a positive way, outside of the formal planning and building approval process.
Nominations were sought from Council staff and Councillors and judged by a three person panel comprising of Mayor Christina Holmdahl, Manager Infrastructure and Manager Development.
Judges were looking for designs which have the capacity to stimulate, engage and delight its occupants, visitors and passers-by. As well as considering the extent of innovation, invention and the originality of the designs, along with a range of other selection criteria.
“We were very impressed with the high quality of design which our two winners showcased,” Mayor Christina Holmdahl said.
“Both buildings incorporate a strong connection with the Tamar and are fabulous additions to our municipality, drawing visitors and locals alike”.
